
The said activity was held at Calawis Bridge, one of the water systems of Marikina Watershed that was totally devastated during the typhoon “Ondoy” last year. It is just one of the water systems in manila that badly necessitate rehabilitation. This movement is graced by many environmentalists and companies that are involved in ecological campaigns. It is extremely considered necessary for the restoration of the Marikina Forests and most of all to secure the people living near the area.
The Tree 500 movement is a tree planting project led by EX-LINKENETS. The movement aims to plant a minimum of 500 trees in Marikina Water shed every three months. Other organizations that are taking the initiatives for the greening of Marikina Watershed are Manila Water, Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE), the Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation (PTFCF), Earthday Network Philippines, Education for Life Foundation, the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), National Power Corp., Fostering People’s Education, Empowerment and Enterprise (FPE3), Meralco, UCPB Foundation, Sagip Sierra Madre Environmental Society, Smart, Haribon Foundation, Mga Anak ni Inang Daigdig, Kalingap Marikina Watershed, True Foundation, the PLDT-Smart Foundation, Antipolo LGU, DENR, and the Diocese of Antipolo.
By reforesting the Marikina Watershed it will eventually improve the capacity of the area to secure rainfall water thereby decreasing the chances of floods at the same time improving water supply for Metro Manila. The mission of this movement is not only for the greening of Marikina Watershed but also to encourage, to engage and to support individuals and businesses in taking responsibility for the environment.
